Film | Painting King Penguins | Wildlife Art

Watch the process as I complete a new painting featuring a pair of king penguins. See how I go from inspirational sightings of king penguins in South Georgia to finished canvas in this film.

Penguin inspiration

I’ve just returned from South Georgia, where I studied king penguins. These colourful and comical characters are the second largest species of penguin and are amazing to watch.

Beginning a painting

When I returned home to my studio I just had to capture their beauty. I start with the backdrop, this time a blue/grey impression of the ice, and then sketch on the outlines.  I then start adding the iconic penguin colours - which on a king penguin are a vibrant orange. Once the colours are down I build up layers to give the effect of the feathers. Then its a question of adding the detail. Using a fine brushstroke, these are the strokes that help bring it to life.

The patience needed to complete these paintings is profound. They are just like the real thing! You must have a great sense of accomplishment doing what you do! We the viewers are the lucky ones to have the pleasure of enjoying the finished product.
