Film | Tawny owl v barn owl | Gylfie v Luna

When Gylfie the barn owl tried entering Luna the tawny owl's favourite nest

Tawny owls are territorial

Luna the tawny owl has nested in this box, named Beech Stump, for several years on the trot, and so when she returns to the roost and finds Gylfie the barn owl inside she doesn't hesitate to attack. Luna is blocking the entrance and so Gylfie has no option but to fight. Note how owls use their talons, and not their beaks as some people think, to fight. As the two owls battle it out they make a lot of noise and the sound soon attracts Gylfie's faithful partner to the scene. Just look at the alarm on his face as he perches, helpless, outside.

Gylfie gets out

Thankfully Gylfie manages to sweep Luna to the side and make her escape and the barn owl pair beat a hasty retreat. Hopefully Gylfie won't try that again! Luna savours victory Watch Luna give a brief chase and then return to Beech Stump and settle quietly back down to roost. She has been spending her days here since before Christmas - keep an eye on her on the livestreams to see if she lays soon.
