This kestrel couple are now excellent parents to their five adorable chicks. But it took them time to find their feet as a new family and for first-time dad Apollo to learn the ropes.
Troubled start
First the pair, named Apollo & Athena, had to overcome their differences. Apollo is a much younger kestrel than his more experienced partner Athena and in the early days of their relationship, she often lost patience with him. )
Shared care
But as soon as the eggs were laid, the pair divvied up their roles and settled down to their joint responsibility. Up to now they had also been taking turns to brood their clutch of five eggs, but as soon as the first tiny chick hatches, Athena takes over brooding - sending Apollo out to hunt for his new family.
The role of kestrel mum is extensive
The female kestrel's first task was to teach the chick to take food. After a bit of encouragement from mum, it opens its beak Next, Athena also takes on the job of protecting her new chicks. Watch her see off barn owl and stock dove intruders.
But this new dad learns fast
By the time the second chick has hatched, Apollo has got the hang of things and, like clockwork, appears to take over when Athena takes a break to stretch her wings. It's heartening to watch him stand guard over his new chick.
Teamwork
This kestrel pair are now a great team. Athena is very caring mother, and she defends the chicks fiercely and first-time dad Apollo is really stepping up to the challenge, too.
