Follow me on the journey as I create a new hedgehog painting, from blank canvas to finished painting
Hedgehog inspiration
I've been inspired to paint hedgehogs before, after watching them sniffing around the garden on the hunt for worms and beetles, but this one was special - it was a hedgehog I rescued and raised by hand.
Beginning with the background
Like every painting I get the background down first before working up the detail. It's important to get the basic block colours on before outlining the subject, or in this case the hedgehog. I often use an airbrush to soften and blend. Then I apply finer brushstrokes to adding the details and really bring this painting to life. This part of the painting process was slow. The average hedgehog has up to 7000 spines!!!!
I hope you’ve enjoyed watching this process, from empty canvas to finished result
