Barn owls Storm, Cloud, and Thunder have fledged from the nest, and I have the opportunity to follow their progress over the next few months as they find their way to independence.
Short flights & parental support
Initially, their flights are short and their landings are clumsy. Over time, they gradually build up their strength and flight skills until they become increasingly proficient. For several weeks the adult barn owls continue to provide food and protection for their newly fledged young and I see Dryer and Gylfie bringing them food. During this time the young owls will be practising and perfecting their hunting techniques until they no longer need feeding.
Developing independence
As they improve their flying and hunting abilities, the young barn owls become more self-sufficient. They start to explore further from the nest site. Eventually, the young owls will leave the care of their parents entirely, and they will leave their home territories, finding their own and becoming fully independent hunters.
