Natural Treasures: The Best of British Wildlife in Art

The Robert Fuller Gallery | November 9th-Dec 1st

I'm celebrating the very best of British wildlife with an exhibition of paintings, prints, photographs, and short films of wildlife from around the Uk.

natural treasures exhibitionart exhibition natural treasuresRed stags spotted in Scotland, squirrels seen in Wales, and kestrels, badgers, and owls observed in my own garden in Yorkshire are among the paintings of natural treasures on show.

I've painted all my favourite animals and I'll be asking you to choose which creature you like best as I compile a list of the best of UK wildlife.

I'm also exhibiting my photographs, films, and live video feeds from cameras hidden inside animal nests nearby. If you plan a visit, expect something a bit like touring the set of BBC Springwatch, only with a display of paintings and prints to enjoy as well!

My exhibition is free to enter and I serve complimentary coffee and mulled wine. Read on to find out more about what to expect.

Exhibition of Wildlife Art

My paintings are known for their fine detail. I use both oil and acrylic paints to apply the finest brushstrokes so that every hair and feather is as lifelike as possible. I also pose my animal subjects in a way that expresses their characters.

Scroll down to see my limited edition print of a red squirrel scampering over a branch, a red stag gazing imperiously over a Scottish glen, and two badger cubs tumbling alongside their mother. The two avocets lifting their heads, one above the other, as they forage in the shallows is an original painting.

Art Exhibition Includes Wildlife Film & Photography

I'm also exhibiting wildlife photographs and films that inspire my paintings. Among the photographs on show are my award-winning shots of weasels. This series won the British Seasons category of British Wildlife Photography Awards in 2016.

And alongside photographs of Britain's wildlife treasures, are studies of animals studied in remote locations like the Galapagos Islands, Kenya and Namibia - all locations I visit to research my wildlife art.

My wildlife films are increasingly popular and have become a valuable resource for scientists researching animal behaviour. I now have 26k followers on YouTube and my gallery has become an animal research hub, supported by Government research and development funding.

Art Exhibition Includes Live Nest Cameras

This event includes live video feeds from cameras hidden in my garden and surrounding countryside. Watch these to glimpse owls, kestrels, weasels, and stoats as they go about their secret lives.

In wintertime these cameras reveal nail-biting territorial battles between owls and kestrels. Watching them is like being on the set of Springwatch!

I share highlights from my surveillance cameras on my live cam blogs. Check up on the latest now by clicking on the links below:

Art Exhibition Includes Wildlife Stories

Alongside my photographic, film and art displays, I've got information boards detailing my research into animal behaviour. These tell the stories of how I get up close to creatures in the wild and the many wildlife adventures that inspire my paintings.

Exhibition Visitors Get to Choose Their Natural Treasure

See How I Paint During Exhibition

Visitors to my exhibition get the chance to see my studio and learn how I translate my photographs and video into artwork. I paint directly from my photographs and then, to get the right composition, cut up my photographs and arrange the cut-outs onto a board until I am happy with a scene.

Recently, I've built props in my garden to get the perfect photograph to paint from. These can take months to realise. I begin by building habitats for different species and then position my props into these spaces.

I build miniature drystone walls,  position hollow logs or leave artfully twisted branches in my animal habitats and then wait for my subjects to wander on 'set'. I've even been known to nail autumn leaves to the entrance of a hollow log so that when an animal emerges the leaves are arranged ‘just so’.

Once I have the perfect shot, it is time to sit down at my easel and paint. I mainly paint in oils or acrylics, occasionally touching up an acrylic painting with coloured pencils.

About me

My intense research and discoveries of animal behaviour has earned me recognition in scientific circles around the world.

I've become an ambassador for British wildlife and have featured on TV, including BBC Springwatch and BBC Countryfile. A five-year research project into stoats is due to feature in a new BBC documentary by BBC Natural World.

Read about my stoat studies here.

I am also a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines including BBC Wildlife Magazine and BBC Countryfile Magazine.

Reviews

Don't just take my word for it. My gallery scores 5*s and ranks top of a TripAdvisor guide to the 10 best art galleries in Yorkshire and scores  4.7 on Google Reviews. Below is a sample of visitor reviews:

Extraordinary Talent - Great Display

Trust your SatNav and follow the signs to this isolated gallery - you will be offered a coffee for your pains!! If you enjoy art and wildlife, this is a genuine pleasure. You will see superb technique, attention to detail and an intimate knowledge of subject and setting across a huge range of subjects - stoats to tigers, penguins to owls! We very much enjoyed the live broadcasts from different nature cameras and looking round the different studio settings in the attics of a rambling farmhouse. This is a brilliant operation - well run and a good balance between the business of art and the celebration of a national talent. Well worth a detour. Fascinating insight into the paintings and the man

Not too far from the beaten track near Thixendale off the A166 York to Bridlington road and well worth a visit. There are many exquisite original paintings on display as well as faithful copy prints, framed or not, place mats, mugs, coasters etc all from the original works of Robert Fuller who lives and works on site when he is not travelling the UK and the World looking for new animal and bird subjects to photograph and to paint. Robert has many secret local sites with webcams set up to study the habits of his subjects and if you are lucky the man himself will be in residence to answer any questions about his works, writings and adventures. Robert is also a regular contributor to the Yorkshire Post. There is always a friendly welcome with the offer of tea and coffee. An absolute must for all countryside, animal and bird lovers. Jeff S , Leeds, United Kingdom , 7122 , August 2019
