King Penguin Pair

I travelled to Antarctica in 2007 and saw the largest penguin colony at St Andrew's Bay with over 1/2 million penguins. But these two were from the smallest colony we visited - just 18 birds - on Saunders Island, Falkland Islands.

It took me 17 years to get a barn owl to nest at my home and studio at Fotherdale Farm. But now I am able to view many barn owls from my living room window as they quarter the valley below.

Courting Gannets

Wildlife Painting of the Week

Living close to Bempton Cliffs gives me the ideal opportunity to study gannets in their sea bird city. I love to watch mini-dramas playing out in the colony as well as their majestic courtship. They shake their heads, face skywards and touch beaks while calling.

Puffins

Wildlife Painting of the Week

This new composition features a group of puffins. It was inspired by watching a colony of these nesting puffins at RSPB Bempton. I visit this site every year to watch the puffins and never tire of their comical behaviour. This painting will feature in my Christmas art exhibition when I will be celebrating the best of British wildlife. Natural Treasures opens at my gallery in Thixendale on November 9th until December 1st.

Hares

Wildlife Painting of the Week

I'm working on a new painting for my Christmas exhibition. The event will be a celebration of the best of British wildlife. Natural Treasures opens at my gallery in Thixendale on November 9th until December 1st.

The painting features hares at rest in a snowfield. Hares are solitary animals and only come together to mate. I was inspired to paint the scene after seeing a large group of hares together one bitterly cold winter.

Snuggled Up

As the October rains and mists set in, I thought the above painting, titled 'Snuggled Up', an appropriate choice for wildlife painting of the week. This pair of barn owl chicks are actually the very first barn owls I helped to rescue and they represent the beginning of my personal history of barn owl conservation here in the Yorkshire Wolds. It's Red Squirrel Awareness Week this week so I have chosen a painting of a red squirrel posed on a scots pine branch for this week's painting of the week. Red squirrels are in serious trouble. The latest estimated population is just 120,000 , of which 75% or more are in Scotland. According to Red Squirrels Northern England there are only 15,000 left in England. Within 10 years there could be none at all. The main problems are: disease, specifically squirrel pox; the loss and fragmentation of their woodland habitat; and competition from the more robust grey squirrel.

Have you noticed how many haw berries are out at the moment? The hedgerows here on the Yorkshire Wolds are aglow with these deep red jewels. I like to use hawthorn berries in my compositions and many of my winter compositions also feature birds posed on these beautiful berries.

This painting of a yellowhammer perched on blackthorn is an old favourite. Yellowhammers are often seen perched right at the top of small trees or bushes. As winter approaches they join mixed flocks of buntings, finches and sparrows to feed on seeds on farmland.
