Luna the tawny owl is getting ready for eggs again. Watch her enthusiasm as she digs out a hollow in the floor of my Beech stump nest box.
Tawny owls Luna & Bomber have returned to my Beech Stump nest box for a fifth year. If they raise a family here, it will be their sixth in this nest box. But this owl couple had already raised chicks before they chose Beech Stump as their regular nest.
Owl foster parents
Although this pair have raised four owl families at Beech Stump, not all of the chicks were their own. When they first nested in this box, in 2021, Luna's eggs failed. They failed again in 2022. At that time I placed two rescued chicks into the nest and the pair readily accepted and fostered these chicks - even going on to accept four more in the same year. In subsequent years these owls have raised foster chicks alongside their own. It will be interesting to see how their story develops this season.
